The 35 foot Creston E., shown here at the city dock at Crisfield, Maryland, was built in 1952 in Deltaville, Virginia. The Creston E. is a typical deadrise work boat common on the Chesapeake Bay used year round for fishing the wide variety of seafood the Bay is famous for. In this scene she is rigged for crabbing and has just unloaded a catch of crabs.
In years past the city of Crisfield was known as the seafood capital of the world. Today things are a bit slower, however, her seafood fishery heritage continues to be the major focus of the community and she remains a focal point of the seafood industry on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The Creston E. was retired a few years ago and no longer fishes these waters but work boats from Crisfield, Smith Island and Tangier Island remain abundant in this harbor. The buildings along the right are relatively unchanged, however, the large building in the back which I understand was the old ice house, was scheduled to be torn down at some point.
