Construction of a lighthouse at St. Marks, 15 miles South of Tallahassee, Florida, was first authorized by Congress in 1828. It was completed in 1831. During the Civil War the lighthouse was seriously damaged but not destroyed. However, because the structural damage was severe, it was reconstructed and on July 8, 1867 the present tower was lighted. The tower is 82 feet tall and is located on the East side of the entrance to the St. Marks River.
The lighthouse is automated and is still operated by the U. S. Coast Guard. The area surrounding the lighthouse is now designated as the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge and the refuge is open to the public. The lighthouse, however, is open to the public on only one day each year.
