Sandy Point is located on the North side of the West end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Sandy Point is a State Recreational Park and draws over 2 million visitors each year. It is the location for many festivals and celebrations including the Maryland Seafood Festival In September each year. For 32 years it was the site of the Annual Chesapeake Appreciation Days celebration and skipjack races held each fall at the beginning of the oyster season.
The first lighthouse was established at Sandy Point in 1858 but its location and distance from the channel proved unsatisfactory. The current Sandy Point lighthouse was built in 1883. The three story brick and wood frame structure was built on a concrete caisson base located one and one half miles north of the Bay Bridge. It is 51 feet tall and was built in 13 feet of water. It was fully automated in 1963 and remains in operation today.
The 50 foot skipjack Kathryn, shown here at the Chesapeake Appreciation Days celebration in 1974, was built in 1901 at Crisfield, Maryland. She was one of the last 15 or so skipjacks still dredging oysters into the 21st Century. The Chesapeake Appreciation Days celebration were last held in October of 1996.
