Battery Park was constructed on a man made landfill that was first planned in the 1950s and started in the 1960s.  The city has, as a matter of practice, expanded the city boundaries by creating landfills.  This was in part  the result of building expansion and the need to find places to dispose of earth being removed for new construction.  The 92 acre Battery Park as seen today has gone far beyond original planning concepts and was only made possible because of the need to dispose of the vast amount of earth excavated in the construction of the nearby World Trade Center</B><I><B> which was destroyed by terrorists September 11, 2001</B></I><B>.  The name of Battery Park comes from the 18</B><B>th</B><B>  century Dutch and English defense fortifications that once stood in this area. </B></div> <bR> </td> </tr></table></body>
