The Reinauer Transportation Company has provided tug and barge service in New York harbor since 1928. Today they operate 30 petroleum barges and 19 tugboats out of New York harbor. In addition to their New York and New Jersey petroleum transportation services they also provide ship docking services for Boston harbor as Boston Towing and Transportation.
The 86 foot 2200 hp Janice Ann Reinauer was built in 1967 in Houma, Louisiana and she has worked out of New York harbor since 1968.
She is shown here off Battery Park along lower Manhattan. Battery Park was constructed on a man made landfill that was first planned in the 1950s and started in the 1960s. The city has, as a matter of practice, expanded the city boundaries by creating landfills. This was in part the result of building expansion and the need to find places to dispose of earth being removed for new construction. The 92 acre Battery Park as seen today has gone far beyond original planning concepts and was only made possible because of the need to dispose of the vast amount of earth excavated in the construction of the nearby World Trade Center which was destroyed by terrorists September 11, 2001. The name of Battery Park comes from the 18th century Dutch and English defense fortifications that once stood in this area.
