Petroleum, cement, salt, ore, coal, and bulk cargo of all kinds are handled along the Clinton Street in the Canton section of Baltimore between Boston Street and Lazaretto Point. In 1969 the Esso petroleum terminal at the corner of Clinton and Boston Streets was regularly visited by oil tankers from around the world and this scene typified the era. Shortly after the Exxon Valdez incident tankers stopped unloading in Baltimore Harbor and were replaced by barges. In addition, supertankers have diminished the role of smaller tankers such as the Esso Danmark as most petroleum is offloaded offshore and tugboat powered barges now bring the petroleum products to mainland distribution points.
Built in 1960, the Esso Danmark was 677 feet in length and a gross tonnage of 20,488. Her diesel power provided a speed of 15 3/4 knots. She has not been listed in Lloyd’s Register of Ships under that name for many years.
The Curtis Bay Towing Company tugboat Drum Point was built in Oyster Bay, New York in 1968. At 95 feet her 2360 h.p. typified the versatile power then needed to support modern harbor needs. At the time of this docking, in November of 1969, the Drum Point was the newest tugboat in the Curtis Bay Towing Company fleet and was the pride of the fleet. Today, Drum Point continues her towing career under Moran Towing Company colors in Norfolk, Virginia and looks quite different after her state of the art “Mortrac” conversion. The “Mortrac” conversion provided an additional 600 h.p. 360 degree azimuthing retractable propulsion unit in the bow to maximize her ability to maneuver and push or pull under full power in any direction. Although she was one of several Moran tugboats to receive the Mortrac conversion, the deckhouse on the Drum Point is much lower than the others giving her a distinctively low profile.
The 1200 h.p. 97 foot Esso New Jersey (o/n 0263089), barely visible in this scene, is assisting at the stern. Built in 1951 as Esso Tug No. 12, she was renamed Exxon New Jersey in 1977. At last report, after serving as Craig Reinauer (1978) and C. A. Crosby, she was serving as the Alex C. with the Bay State Towing Company in Boston, Massachusetts.
