The United States Coast Guard Icebreaker Southwind was one of the six 269 foot “Wind” class icebreakers (the others being Northwind, Eastwind, Westwind, Burton Island, and Edisto). None remain in Coast Guard service today. The Eastwind, Burton Island, Southwind, Westwind and Edisto were decommissioned and sold; the Northwind was last seen mothballed on the James River during a 1995 Tugboat Enthusiasts Society cruise out of Norfolk, VA.
The Southwind is shown here in drydock for repairs at the Key highway Shipyards of Bethlehem Steel in December of 1969 after grounding off the West coast of Greenland in August of that year. The Key shipyards have been closed for many years and a high rise condominium and marina now occupy part of this property.
The large five bladed propeller in the foreground was for the Olympic Valor scheduled for repairs at these facilities. To the left the United Fruit ship Esparta (stack with red band and white diamond) is also in for repairs.
The original of this picture was accepted by the United States Coast Guard Art Program and was added to their permanent collection.
