Broadway Pier at the foot of Broadway Street in Fells Point remains, at least for the present, a home port for Tugboats serving Baltimore Harbor. As a famous Revolutionary War shipyard Fells Point has an established place in United States history. The USS Constellation, now docked at the Inner Harbor, was built here.
The 99 foot 2400 h.p. Moran tugboat Fells Point was built in Madisonville, Louisiana in 1956 and is a typical modern day reminder of this community's long maritime heritage. The Fells Point no longer docks here at the foot of Broadway and now operates out of Norfolk but no longer looks as she did when this scene was painted. In 1996 she was converted to a “Mortrac” design and provided with a 600 hp 360 degree rotating retractable bow thruster increasing her total hp to 3000. This change greatly enhanced her performance enabling her to move and maneuver in any direction, turn in her own length, and provide power for ship assistance with either the bow or the stern as required. In addition to the power enhancement, the Mortrac conversion also included major changes in her deck arrangement and pilot house location giving her an unusually low profile well suited for working with Naval ships.
